Can SME escalate their intergration in the ESG & Sustainability landscape?

Knowledge Barriers, Financial Barriers, Regulatory & Policy Barriers…

These factors are frequently cited when discussing the convergence of two essential components of the Mauritian economic landscape - SMEs and green initiatives.

While the benefits of integrating green practices and sustainable initiatives are widely recognized—ranging from cost savings to enhanced market competitiveness and environmental stewardship—many SMEs in Mauritius have been slow to embrace these practices. This reluctance stems from several challenges that hinder their motivation and ability to prioritize sustainability in their organizational strategies.

However, since the past few years, there has been a noticeable change in attitude among various stakeholders, including government bodies, financial institutions, the corporate fraternity as well as consumers, as they have been work collaboratively to promote the adoption of green initiatives and sustainability practices at all levels. This shift is evident in the inclusion of eco-friendly measures in recent national budgets, the growing availability of green financial products and services as well as enhanced capacity building and trainings.

Key initiatives that have been observed include:

The Government:

  1. Financial Support and Incentives:
  • Green Investment Scheme: The government offers financial support, grants, and subsidies to SMEs investing in renewable energy, energy efficiency, and other green technologies. These incentives help offset the initial costs associated with adopting sustainable practices.
  • Tax Incentives: Tax breaks and incentives are provided to businesses that implement environmental management systems, obtain eco-certifications, or engage in eco-friendly activities.
  • Green Loans: Financial institutions supported by government schemes offer preferential loan terms and interest rates for SMEs investing in green projects.

  1. Innovation, Capacity Building and Training:

Workshop & Seminars: Organisation of workshops, seminars, and training programs focused on sustainability and green practices. These initiatives aim to educate SME owners and employees on the benefits of sustainability, as well as provide practical guidance on implementation.

Guidance towards organisational efficiency: Provision of training initiatives focus on energy efficiency, waste management, water conservation, and compliance with environmental regulations, empowering SMEs to implement sustainable solutions effectively.

Support for Research & innovation: Funding and grants are available to support research and development initiatives that promote innovation in green technologies and sustainable practices.

The Private Sector:

Sectoral Associations: Associations representing various sectors, such as tourism, agriculture, and manufacturing, promote sustainability through sector-specific initiatives. For example, the Mauritius Tourism Promotion Authority (MTPA) encourages eco-friendly practices among tourism SMEs.

Green Business Certification Programs: Private organizations and NGOs in Mauritius offer green business certification programs and eco-labels. These programs certify SMEs that meet specific environmental standards and criteria, validating their commitment to sustainability. For instance, organizations like the Mauritius Standards Bureau (MSB) collaborate with private entities to develop and implement certification schemes tailored to SMEs' needs.

Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Initiatives: Larger corporations in Mauritius often integrate sustainability into their CSR initiatives, collaborating with SMEs to promote sustainable practices throughout their supply chains. CSR programs may include funding opportunities, technical assistance, and capacity-building activities aimed at supporting SMEs in adopting sustainable practices.

Technology Transfer and Innovation Hubs: Technology providers and innovation hubs collaborate with SMEs to develop and deploy green technologies. They offer access to cutting-edge solutions for energy management, waste reduction, and environmental monitoring. Initiatives like technology transfer programs and incubators support SMEs in adopting and scaling up sustainable innovations.

Supplier Engagement and Sustainable Procurement: Private sector companies engage SME suppliers through sustainable procurement practices and supplier development programs. They set sustainability criteria for suppliers, conduct audits, and provide guidance and support to help SMEs improve their environmental performance and meet green supply chain standards.

Financial Institutions:

In Mauritius, as in many parts of the world, the journey towards integrating sustainable practices and green initiatives into Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) is fraught with challenges. The way will be long but not impossible.
